A Pottery Village Of Ancient Thang Long

30 kilometers southeast of Hanoi lies an ancient pottery village that remains untouched by rampant commercialism. The visit includes a leisurely drive of 30 minutes on the other side of the Red River. A villager will wait for you and walk with you on village lanes to visit to a few pottery-making households. You will see different kinds of products, including ceramic paintings, witness interesting steps to make pottery in old methods, meet craftsmen and talk to them during their daily work.

This tour of the pottery village is a relaxing getaway to the countryside 30 kilometers southeast of Hanoi. This pottery village remains untouched by the rampant commercialism of many historic sites. Archeological evidence proves the development of it as a center for trade in pottery and ceramics long before its more famous neighbor, Bat Trang. Earthenware bricks from the 9th century have been excavated. Artifacts excavated subsequently attest that this village supplied building materials to the construction of Thang Long Citadel in 1010.

Leaving behind the glorious past as the first village to produce and trade in tiles and ceramics of the ancient Thang Long, the village today is a modest and peaceful pottery village where many craftsmen still preserve the traditional method while others have applied high-tech to produce fine pottery. One thing is for sure, no matter which products they make and techniques they use, the villagers are all friendly and hospitable, making a visit enjoyable and knowledgeable.
