Top Destinations for Nightlife in Asia

10 Jul, 2023 | A-> Z Guide

This article will give you insights into the best spots to enjoy nightlife in Asia, enhancing your travel experience.

One of the most exciting things to look forward to when you are visiting Asia is the nightlife. This continent boasts some of the most diversified experiences: from vibrant clubs, bars, dance floors, cafes to food tours and cultural discovery. To have a truly spectacular experience though, you need to know where to go.

In this post, we are going to introduce you to some of the best party cities in Asia. For each, we will walk you through top destinations and activities and what you should know about each of the cities' scene.

Tips When Partying in Asia

Before we dive into our list of the best party destinations in Asia, here are a few quick tips to help ensure you have a great time:

  • Get off the beaten track. In every city, there are certain districts, bars, and clubs that foreigners tend to frequent. While partying with your fellow travelers can be a blast, do not overlook the experiences you can have drinking, dining, or dancing with the locals at lesser-known venues.
  • Ask for recommendations. Check online for reviews and ask for suggestions and tips from others who have visited the destinations in your itinerary. Try to get a feel for what the vibes would be like at the venues you are considering. That way, you will not waste your time on establishments that do not fit you.
  • Don’t be afraid to be spontaneous. Even though planning ahead can be a big help, you are going to find yourself curious about bars and clubs you discover while you are touring each location. Sometimes the most magical moments happen when you diverge from your itinerary to try something unexpected.
  • Stay safe. The same advice applies here as does when you are partying in your home country; watch your belongings, scan your surroundings, and steer clear of trouble. Although you can party by yourself, you will stay safer with a group.

Without further ado, let’s check out our recommendations for the best nightlife in Asia.

1. Ho Chi Minh City

Busiest time: December through April (the dry season)

Formerly called Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is famous for its history, architecture, cultural diversity, and—of course—its nightlife. HCMC is densely populated and can be crowded even during the off-season. So, the best time to visit depends on what you are looking for. If bustling crowds energize you, pay a visit during the dry season. If you want things a little quieter, you might prefer the off-season.

Must-Try Nightlife Activities in Ho Chi Minh City

Bui Vien Street is practically synonymous with nightlife in HCMC, it is also referred to as the “backpacker district.” There are cheap places to stay and cheaper places to drink, you can buy a beer for less than a dime. Bright lights, deafening noise, and an endless collection of pubs and restaurants await you.

While Bui Vien can be a lot of fun, sometimes it can get too overwhelming. Plus, you might be looking for an experience that is a little more refined. Some alternative nightlife spots to hit include Zion, Qui Lounge, Dao House and Chill Skybar.

To leave the hustle and bustle of the streets even farther behind, head out on a dinner cruise from Saigon port or Bach Dang Wharf. These cruises serve delicious cuisine and are very reasonably priced. Expect to pay anywhere from 550,000 VND (around $23 USD) to 1,500,000 VND (about $64 USD) per person. The dazzling glow of the colourful city lights reflecting in the dark waters is unforgettable.
If you prefer the hubbub of the city streets, sign up for a night food tour. Renting a scooter for one of these tours gives you some time off your feet while your guide shows you spots where you can try the most authentic street food.

What Else You Should Know About Ho Chi Minh City Nightlife

Expect a wide price range in Ho Chi Minh City. Bui Vien is where you should head if you want to party on a budget. At some of the more luxurious nightlife destinations, you will spend an arm and a leg on a drink. Most establishments in the city are concentrated at one of these extremes; there are not as many in the mid-price range.

For example, in Bui Vien, you might find a beer for around 10,000 dong, which is less than US 50 cents. The price for a drink at a luxurious bar could run between $12-$20 USD, however.

Pros:

  • In HCMC, you can find a huge selection of nightlife experiences all in one place, including unique experiences like dinner cruises and scooter tours.
  • HCMC’s nightlife scene goes far beyond Bui Vien even though a lot of tourists never make it past the backpacking district. That means that you can find some quiet, exclusive clubs and bars outside of Bui Vien if you look for them.

Cons:

  • Some nightlife areas in HCMC are extremely loud. Be prepared for sensory overload.
  • Alas, HCMC has some notoriety for crimes. Make sure your belongings are secure, and keep an eye on your wallet.

2. Bangkok

Busiest time: November through March

As the beating heart of Thailand, Bangkok has something to offer everyone. Whether you are looking for a wild night on the dance floor, a quiet dinner cruise, or anything in between, you will find all you are looking for and more in this multifaceted city.

Must-Try Nightlife Activities in Bangkok

Where do we start with recommending nightlife activities in Bangkok? Popular nightlife districts include Nana, Silom, Thanglor, Ekkamai, Royal City Avenue (RCA), Khaosan and Sukhumvit Soi 11. This city is Asia’s crowning jewel for adult entertainment and Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza are where to head for this type of fun.

In Bangkok, you can find gentlemen’s bars, gogo bars and nightclubs. On the more sedate side, you can head to a rooftop bar or a live music club (this city has a lively jazz scene). Bangkok is also renowned for its cabaret shows, especially those that feature Kathoey performers (Thai “ladyboys”).

For something different, you can take in dinners accompanied by classic Thai dance, boxing shows (more on that shortly), or head out to the night markets to shop for souvenirs.
There are quite a few different night markets in Bangkok such as Chatuchak Weekend Market, the One Ratchada Night Market and Jodd Fairs. Each night market offers a different atmosphere and wares. For example, Jodd Fairs features vintage vibes while Chang Chui Plane Night Market features a decommissioned airplane as part of the setting!
Tourists in search of action and excitement can watch a Muay Thai (Thai boxing) show. In this fascinating sport, fighters make use of not just their fists, but also their knees, shins and elbows. For that reason, it is called the “art of eight limbs.” You can enjoy Thai boxing at locations like Rajadamnern Boxing Stadium and Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

What Else You Should Know About Bangkok Nightlife

Bangkok is rated as quite safe for tourists, even at night. That said, the usual precautions apply; if you are in a dark, crowded location, watch your pockets. Also, police raids sometimes happen at nightlife establishments, so be mindful of your activities. The authorities in Bangkok can be surprisingly harsh.

Be aware that during March through May, Bangkok can be pretty warm and humid even after sundown. So, make sure you stay well-hydrated and wear cool clothes so you do not overheat while partying.

Pros:

  • There is literally something for everyone in Bangkok after dark. Whatever excites you, you will discover plenty of venues catering to your every desire.
  • Bangkok’s nightlife scene is pretty affordable.
  • While Bangkok used to have a seedy reputation, that has been largely replaced by a very positive and inviting image.

Cons:

  • The hot, humid weather can sometimes fatigue and dehydrate you as you party.
  • If you are visiting on a weeknight, you might not find a lot of establishments open outside of the Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza districts.

3. Siem Reap

Busiest time: December through March

If you decide to pay a visit to Angkor Wat, there is a good chance you will be staying in the resort town of Siem Reap. This city is full of tourists during peak season but has a relaxing and serene vibe. While there are plenty of opportunities to unwind, you will also find venues where you can party.

Must-Try Nightlife Activities in Siem Reap

Pub Street is the go-to destination for travelers looking to experience the best of Siem Reap’s nightlife scene. As the name suggests, this colorful street is lined with pubs and bars. Restaurants and nightclubs also are found in abundance here. Some popular spots include Angkor What? Bar, X-Bar, Miss Wong Cocktail Bar Siem Reap, and others. And yet there is another little-known pub street called the ‘Khmer Pub Street’ just a short distance away from the tourist magnet, where the locals truly spend the night. This is a great place for cultural immersion and partying the Cambodian way, but prepare yourself that most people there might not speak English.
If you want a break from walking around, consider going on an evening tuk-tuk tour. A tuk-tuk is a type of rickshaw that is powered by a motor and travels on three wheels. Your tuk-tuk driver will act as your guide as you explore Siem Reap’s night market, stalls and shops, and discover all the best pubs. It is a great way to get some local insights into the nightlife scene.
When you arrive at Angkor Night Market, you will find a wide assortment of handcrafted goods, antiques and more, all available at bargain prices.

What Else You Should Know About Siem Reap Nightlife

Pub Street is a blast, but the noise levels can sometimes be a bit much, especially when you visit during the busy season. If they are getting to you, you can find some restaurants close to Wat Damnak to have a quiet drink and a bite to eat.

Pros:

  • Siem Reap is considered one of the safest tourist destinations in Asia.
  • Pub Street and the Night Market are both budget-friendly nightlife options. You do not need to have a lot of cash burned to party and shop in the small hours of the morning.
  • The nightlife in Siem Reap is lively, but not pushy. As the town is laid-back, you are less likely to have vendors or prostitutes haranguing you to purchase goods and services.

Cons:

  • Some people find Pub Street too noisy for their tastes.

4. Gili Trawangan

Busiest time: June through August and December through January

The chill beach vibes of Gili Trawangan offer a totally different atmosphere than the bustling cities we have just talked about. Gili Trawangan, lovingly called “Gili T,” is an island escape where you can swim, sunbathe, snorkel and dive.

Must-Try Nightlife Activities in Gili Trawangan

The best way to start your night in Gili T is to enjoy sunset from a spot like Sunset Point or the Villa Almarik waterfront, or even a high point on the island like Gili T Hilltop. Think about packing a picnic dinner to enjoy. If you are on the beach, make sure to capture some photos at sunset on Gili T’s famous swings over the water.
After you marvel at the beauty of the sun setting over the waves, it is time to party through the night. It is totally up to you whether you want to continue indulging in the quiet, relaxed island ambiance you've enjoyed during the day, or whether to mingle with Gili T’s vibrant crowds.

Party bars on the island include Sama Sama Reggae Bar, Jiggy, Evolution, and Ombak Bar, among others. You can even head out on a party boat.

Tourists in search of a quieter experience can try Pearl Beach Lounge or Tir Na Nog.

What Else You Should Know About Gili Trawangan Nightlife

Keep in mind that the various bars and nightclubs are busier on some nights than others. For example, Tir Na Nog is usually pretty quiet, but on Wednesdays, it tends to be more crowded. Looking up a schedule before you go that lists the busiest and slowest nights for all the bars is a good idea.

Pros:

  • Full moon parties await visitors who want to party all night on the beach.
  • Gili T is very small. So, those with FOMO will be glad to hear that they can check out all of the nightlife hotspots just by walking around.
  • If improvising is more your travel style than planning, you will love Gili T. You can have an amazing experience there without planning a single thing. Just venture out of your hotel room and see what catches your eye.

Cons:

  • Drugs tend to be readily available on Gili T. But they are not very high in quality, and may sometimes be tainted. Avoid them.

5. Tokyo

Busiest time: March through May

If you are searching for the best nightclub in Asia, there is a good chance you will find it among the many lively establishments in Tokyo. There is so much to see and do in this magical city; during the day, you can tour museums, temples and gardens, while after sunset, you can explore the clubs and bars.

Must-Try Nightlife Activities in Tokyo

Tokyo will delight you with endless varieties. Head to Shibuya for bright lights, karaoke bars, dance clubs, and restaurants galore. One cool thing about this area is that it attracts both foreigners and locals, so you will get a nice blend of social experiences. Visitors can also find the notorious Kabukicho district here.

If rowdy crowds and noise do not bother you, venture to Roppongi. This district offers something for every budget. Drink cheap booze at a dive bar or visit a classy jazz bar for a live performance.

Along with these districts, some others to try include Ginza, Shimokitazawa and Ebisu. Each has its own distinctive ambiance and appeal. Wherever you go, do not forget to do a bit of rooftop dining; the views of this luminous city are spectacular after nightfall.

One unique nightlife attraction that Tokyo is famous for is its tiny, hard-to-find bars. In fact, some of these feature hidden entrances. You might even need a password to get into a few of these intriguing venues!
Tokyo visitors who want to experience more of the culture and traditions of Japan can watch a geisha performance while in the city. These shows can be varied, including dance, traditional music and other performances, offering a window into the rich heritage of the country.

For a change of pace, consider visiting Tokyo Disneyland for magical night-time ambiance and classic rides and attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain.
Another exciting night activity in Tokyo is a go-kart tour. That’s right—you do not just drive around a track. Instead, you get to drive through Tokyo’s streets with a group and a guide, who will show you the sights.

What Else You Should Know About Tokyo Nightlife

The majority of public transit routes shut down by midnight. So, if you plan to stay out later than that, make sure you have some alternative arrangements for returning to your hotel.

Pros:

  • There are literally hundreds of bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and other venues from which to choose. You could spend years in Tokyo and only see a tiny fraction of what is out there.
  • Travelers who want a quiet, intimate setting for drinks and conversation will have a blast discovering Tokyo’s secret bars.
  • While not 100% hazard-free (see below), on the whole, Tokyo is a pretty safe city for foreigners to explore after dark.

Cons:

  • Scams are commonplace in Tokyo, so watch out for any offers that seem too good to be true. The touts (solicitors) you see outside of some establishments trying to lure you in sometimes are planning to con you.

6. Phuket

Busiest time: November through February

Bangkok is not the only destination in Thailand that should go on every partier’s bucket list, you also are going to want to spend a few nights in Phuket City. With its beautiful 19th-century architecture, sandy beaches, and exciting nightlife; it is a place every traveler should visit at least once.

Must-Try Nightlife Activities in Phuket

For hundreds of bars, lounges and clubs all in one place, go to Bangla Road, also called Soi Bangla. This is Phuket’s biggest tourist hotspot at night.

If Bangla Road is a bit too intense, you can catch a break from all the noise and bustle by going to Karon Beach. This area has a few clubs, but it is more popular for dining and drinking. Speaking of beaches, Phuket is a fantastic destination for full-moon parties.
Like Bangkok, Phuket is another destination for Muay Thai boxing competitions. Some arenas where you can check out the action include Patong Boxing Stadium, Rawai Boxing Stadium and Bangla Boxing Stadium.

One more fabulous destination to add to your bucket list is Phuket FantaSea. This cultural theme park is only open at night, and features attractions like the Festival Village shopping street, the Golden Kinnaree restaurant, and a “Las-Vegas style Thai Culture & Illusion theatrical spectacle” known as “Fantasy of a Kingdom.” With the colorful lights, ornate buildings and friendly hospitality of the staff, the experience is one that will stay with you for a lifetime.

What Else You Should Know About Phuket Nightlife

Even though there are no curfews in this city, it is useful to note that bars are only open until around 2 or 3 AM. If you are not ready to sleep, you can head to a nightclub to keep the party going longer.

Pros:

  • Phuket is yet another nightlife destination in Asia that has something for everyone. If you are planning to stay up all night, you will have no problem finding a wide range of things to do.
  • As with Bangkok, Phuket has a bit of a seedy reputation that it does not deserve. This city’s nightlife has transformed over the years for the better.

Cons:

  • Phuket is a pricey destination compared to many others on our list. Budget your experiences carefully to make sure you do not overspend.
