Located 116 kilometers south of Colombo, Galle is seen as the capital of southern Sri Lanka. Its old world charm and stunning beaches appeal everybody from families, honeymooners and solo travelers. The strong influence of the Dutch on the people, the city architecture and especially the dress code is still evident. Galle provides an impressive example of an urban ensemble which shows the harmony of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The charming atmosphere of the city is formed by wide streets planted with grass and shaded by suriyas, pretty houses with its own garden and an open veranda supported by columns.
